health, beauty and well-being -- from soy milk

Soy and Nutrition

Soybeans contain rich protein, vitamins A, B1, B2, and other mineral elements. High-quality soy protein is considered equal to that of poultry and milk. Soybeans contain the highest concentration of protein among all the legumes: 40 percent protein by volume compared to 20 percent for other beans. The FDA determined that 25 grams of soy protein per day may reduce the risk of heart disease by reducing cholesterol.

Soy milk has a greater variety of complex carbohydrates than whole milk. These result in a low glycemic index, making soy less likely to overstimulate blood sugar levels, which makes it a good choice in a diabetic diet. Soy milk and okara (the soy fiber remaining after making soymilk) are good sources of isoflavones. Okara is a good source of dietary fiber.

The fat content in soy milk is highly unsaturated and includes concentrations of Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in soy, flax, and fish, are being studied for their ability to lower the risk of heart disease and even cancer. In addition, Omega-3 may be essential to brain development in infants.

Health Benefits of Soy Milk

Soymilk is an important soyfood and offers many of the health benefits of soy foods. Research has shown potential health benefits of soy in preventing breast cancer, preventing and slowing prostate cancer, fighting heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and kidney disease, promoting eye health.

Most importantly, soyfoods, including soymilk, are also considered to be very effective on anti-aging and alleviating symptoms of menopause.

The Beauty of Soy for Skin Health

A growing amount of evidence suggests that what we eat can have a real effect on how our skin looks and feels. A recent study reports on the possible skin health benefits of dietary soy antioxidants for postmenopausal women1. In this study, a group of 29 postmenopausal women consumed 100 milligrams of an isoflavone-rich soy extract every day for 6 months. The study investigators collected skin samples at both the beginning and the end of the study to determine the effect of the soy antioxidants on the skin. In 23 of the 29 postmenopausal women, consumption of antioxidants daily for 6 months resulted in an increase in skin thickness by nearly 10% on average. In addition to the positive changes seen in skin thickness, many of the postmenopausal women in the study showed an increase in collagen (25 of 29 women) and elastic fibers (22 of 29 women), components of the skin that are important for skin structure and strength. Lastly, the results of this study indicated that most of the study participants (21 of the 29 postmenopausal women) showed an increase in the number of blood vessels in the skin, which might help with normal skin hydration. The study investigators concluded that the consumption of soy antioxidants for six months could support a healthy skin appearance.

This new study adds to the growing evidence that soy can support normal skin health. Like this new study, an earlier study2, which used Revival Soy shakes, showed that you can fight the visible signs of aging with regular daily use. The results showed:

  • SKIN: 93% of women showed significant improvements in skin appearance. Skin flaking and discoloration were reduced after 3 months, while reductions in skin wrinkling were seen after 6 months.
  • HAIR: Significant improvements in hair roughness, dullness, manageability, and overall assessment were seen after 6 months of Revival consumption.
  • NAILS: Significant improvements were seen in nail roughness, ridging, flaking, splitting, and overall appearance after 6 months of Revival consumption.
